As a cornerstone of SaudiVision2030, the Red Sea project now stands as the world's largest microgrid energystorage project, with a storage capacity of 1.3GWh. Utilizing Huawei’s Smart String ESS solution, this groundbreaking project is redefining renewable energy infrastructure.
[pdf] Jointly developed by National Energy New Energy Research Institute and Ningxia Electric Power Co., Ltd., the project employs hybrid grid-forming technology tailored to western China’s renewable-rich grids, focusing on configuration optimization, low-cost sodium-ion integration, cluster management, and hybrid grid-forming validation.
[pdf] Installed by Switzerland-based MET Group, the project is powered by Tesla Megapack 2 units, supplied by Huawei Technologies’ battery units, and built by Forest-Vill and follows a smaller 4 MW / 8 MWh pilot at the same site in 2022.
