The Botswana energy storage project is quietly becoming Africa’s dark horse in the clean energy race. As of March 2025, this $120 million initiative has already deployed enough battery capacity to power 15,000 homes during peak demand.
[pdf] It is anticipated that Botswana will need 140 MW of battery energy storage capacity by that time. Currently, 97% of Botswana’s electricity is generated from coal, and the country imports electricity from neighbouring South Africa, via its state-owned utility Eskom.

Unlike grid-tied solar installations that feed power back to utilities, emergency systems focus on battery storage and immediate power availability.
