Portugal’s Ministry of Energy has announced that it has allocated €100 million ($104.2 million) to 43 energy storage projects which should be installed by the end of 2025. A total of 79 applications were vying for grant support secured under the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP).
[pdf] The Red Sands project will be the largest standalone BESS to reach this stage on the continent, designed to store power during off-peak hours and release it when demand is highest—providing essential grid stability and flexibility for South Africa’s electricity network.
[pdf] The project, one of the largest renewable energy developments in the country to date, will supply electricity to over 300,000 households, significantly improving power availability while helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 50,000 tons annually.
