India has marked a significant milestone with the opening of its first fully automated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) factory in Karnataka. The inauguration took place on June 27, 2025, in Bengaluru, the state capital.
[pdf] Between 2022 and May 2025, India auctioned approximately 12.8GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity for both hybrid and standalone applications. However, only about 219MWh of BESS capacity is reported to be operational, leaving a large pipeline of projects under construction.
[pdf] The facility, known as Chilca-BESS, is made up of 84 cabinets of lithium-ion batteries. Now in commercial operation, it is the largest energy storage system of its kind in Peru, according to the Peruvian ministry of energy and mining.
