This project, developed by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), and the Vietnam Energy Institute, marks a crucial step towards Vietnam’s target of developing 300MW of energy storage by 2030, as outlined in the latest Eighth Power Development Plan (PDP 8).
[pdf] The Rudong project is the world's first commercial scale deployment of a non-pumped hydro, gravitational energy storage system. An anticipated 80% round trip efficiency puts the EVx™ ahead of competing long duration technologies such as flow battery, thermal, and compressed air energy storage.
[pdf] Rivi Danavi Private Co., a joint venture between Lakdhanavi Ltd. and WindForce PLC, is implementing the project. Work will also include a 12 MWh battery storage facility, 132 kV transmission system and 132 kV grid substation. The project is scheduled for completion within the first quarter of 2027.
